I guess this little
story is Internet marketing in a
nutshell...
Over the last week,
the great folks at SlingShotMedia
who send out this newsletter did a free cleanup of
my list (that's the kinda guys they are...always
looking out for me) :-)
They were concerned
that a newsletter which should take
about 30 minutes to send was taking several hours and
stressing their server!
Apparently, the cleaner
the list, the faster a
newsletter can be delivered...and they badly wanted to
give my list a makeover :-)
So, they unsubbed any
email addresses that bounced,
refused delivery or were timing out.
The net result? My
list shrank by a full ten percent!
I find that amazing.
But let's take the
concept several steps further...
>From a list of
34,000...if...
...10% are useless
addresses.
...10% are lost in delivery (sent to email addresses who
forward the newsletter to bad addresses)
...10% are removed by filters for any number of reasons
...10% are deleted manually without being read
...10% are filed "to be read later"
...we're left with
50% who actually OPEN the newsletter!
I have no idea if the percentages above are correct
(apart from the first one). Let's say that, instead of
all the percentages being 10%, they were all 20%...
...now NO ONE is reading
the newsletter!
Sheesh!
It makes you wonder,
doesn't it... ;-)
(the take home message here is not to believe the
numbers...a big list can be a dud, and a website
getting tons of traffic can be losing money...)
